If your teeth have started to shift

Maybe a front tooth has started to overlap its neighbor, or a gap shows up in every video call. You might have worn braces as a teen and noticed a few teeth moving since. Washington, DC Invisalign at DCStylishSmile straightens teeth with clear, removable aligners for adults and teens from Dupont Circle and across the city.

Your aligner plan weighs how your smile looks, how your teeth meet, and how you breathe at night. It starts with a 3D scan of both arches and CBCT imaging, and Dr. Bukai, a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, checks it against your airway before we order aligners.

How do clear aligners move teeth?

  • Custom-made aligners

Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners, each shaped slightly differently from the last, so teeth shift in small planned steps.

  • A new set every one to two weeks

Each set moves your teeth a little further.

  • 20 to 22 hours of wear a day

You take them out to eat, brush, and floss.

  • Attachments where needed

Small tooth-colored attachments give the aligners extra grip where a tooth needs more force.

Dr. Firas Bukai, Washington, DC dentist

Bite and breathing checks before your teeth move

Teeth can look straight and still meet unevenly, which can wear or chip them and strain your jaw. That's why we plan aligner treatment for how your teeth work, not only how they look.

A plan your dentist reviews tooth by tooth

Treatment-planning software maps how each tooth will move. Dr. Bukai reviews that plan himself before we order your aligners, checking where each tooth ends up and how your upper and lower teeth will meet.

How tooth position can affect your breathing

Tooth position and arch shape can affect how much room your tongue has, which may matter if you snore or breathe through your mouth at night. We factor breathing into your aligner plan, and if snoring or jaw pain needs its own care, our dental sleep medicine and TMD therapy can run alongside your aligners.

What to expect during aligner treatment

Aligner treatment follows five stages:

Explore whitening and bonding

Crowding, gaps, and bite problems aligners can correct

Clear aligners treat most mild to moderate alignment problems in adults and teens, including:

01

Crowding

Teeth that overlap or twist, which also makes them harder to clean.

02

Gaps

Spaces between teeth, including a gap between the front teeth.

03

Bite problems

Overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite.

04

Relapse

Teeth that have shifted since earlier orthodontic treatment.

Some complex bites need more than aligners can do. If that's true for yours, you'll hear it at your consultation.

Paying for aligner treatment

The cost of clear aligner treatment depends on how many teeth need to move, how far, and for how long. You'll get your estimate with your treatment plan, before we order aligners. Some PPO plans include an orthodontic benefit, often with a lifetime maximum, and we'll confirm whether yours does before your consultation.

Many plans cover orthodontics only up to a certain age, so they're more likely to pay toward a teen's aligners than an adult's.

Insurance, Payment, and Membership.

We accept most major PPO dental insurance plans, including Delta Dental, United Healthcare, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, Guardian, United Concordia, Humana, and more. For care beyond insurance, we offer CareCredit, Sunbit, and Proceed Financial, plus our in-house DCStylishSmile Membership — a flat annual fee that covers preventive care and gives members a meaningful discount on everything else.

Patient Stories

In their own words.

  • I was previously hiding my smile. Dr. Bukai explained my treatment plan in layman’s terms and made me feel more and more comfortable. My new crowns are AMAZING. Dr. Bukai is like Michelangelo.
    Max B.
  • Three dentists before Dr. Bukai couldn’t find a solution. Dr. Bukai had one right away. One single visit, no extra costs, no sales pitches. No pain during and after. His human sensibility to know what to do — and his continued dental education — did not hurt in my case either.
    Michael M.
  • Dr. Bukai and his staff are always very accommodating especially when I have an issue with my teeth. Whenever I consider going to a dentist that is closer to me I always remember their service and tell myself, “Nah! Why should I want to do that!"

Frequently asked questions

How much does Invisalign cost in Washington, DC?

It depends on how many aligners your case needs and how long treatment runs, so we give you a figure after your scan and before you commit. For Washington, DC Invisalign at our office, you can use an orthodontic benefit if your PPO plan has one, plus CareCredit, Sunbit, or Proceed Financial to spread payments out.

How long does aligner treatment take?

Many adult cases take about 12 to 18 months, and minor crowding can finish sooner. Your plan shows the expected timeline before you start. Daily wear matters most: wearing the aligners 20 to 22 hours a day keeps teeth moving on schedule, while frequent breaks can add weeks to treatment.

Does wearing aligners hurt?

Most people feel pressure for a day or two after switching to a new set, a sign the teeth are moving, and it fades as you adjust. Your speech may sound slightly different for the first few days. Aligners have smooth edges, so they're easier on your cheeks and lips than brackets.

Is Invisalign an option for teens?

Yes. We treat teens as well as adults, and aligners come out for sports, music lessons, and photos. The main question for a teen is wear time, since aligners only work while they're in. At the consultation, we'll talk with you and your teen about habits that keep treatment on track during school weeks and weekends away.

Will I need a retainer when treatment ends?

Yes. Teeth tend to drift back toward their old positions, especially in the first year, so every aligner case we finish in Washington, DC ends with a retainer. We offer Vivera retainers, which are clear and removable, and bonded retainers, a thin wire fixed behind the front teeth. Your dentist will explain how often to wear yours.
