Diplomate, AADSM

Why see a TMJ & sleep apnea dentist in Washington, DC?

Sleep-disordered breathing is one of the areas we care about most at DCStylishSmile. As a Diplomate of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), Dr. Bukai approaches your airway as part of the same system as your teeth, your bite, and your overall health. When sleep suffers, the mouth is often the first place it shows.

TMJ & sleep apnea dentistry at our Washington office treats obstructive sleep apnea and primary snoring with custom oral appliances, fitted by Dr. Bukai and worn while you sleep. Compared with a CPAP machine, these appliances are small, silent, and far easier to live with, which is what makes treatment truly effective.

Custom oral appliances for snoring and sleep apnea.

A custom oral appliance is a small, discreet device that holds your jaw in a position that keeps your airway open while you sleep. We fabricate each one for patients who have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea or primary snoring, then fit it to your mouth, your bite, and your comfort. There's no mask or hose involved, and nothing to plug in on the nightstand.

Dr. Firas Bukai, Washington, DC dentist

Sleep, your bite, and TMD are connected.

Airway problems that disturb your sleep often start to show up in your jaw. Clenching, morning headaches, clicking, and worn-down teeth can all trace back to how you breathe at night.

Our TMD evaluations look at the whole system (muscles, joints, posture, occlusion) so we're treating the causes beyond the symptoms. The same whole-body thinking runs through everything we do at DCStylishSmile, with airway, sleep, nutrition, and inflammation all considered.

Treatment

What treatment looks like at DCStylishSmile.

  1. Oral appliance therapy begins with a diagnosis.

  2. If a sleep physician has already diagnosed you with obstructive sleep apnea or primary snoring, Dr. Bukai can evaluate whether a custom appliance is the right fit and design one around your anatomy.

  3. If you suspect a problem but haven't been tested, a consultation is still a smart first step: we'll look at the signs together and explain what a proper diagnosis involves before discussing treatment.

Either way, your first visit is calm, supportive, and built around the whole picture of your health.

Patient Stories

In their own words.

  • I was previously hiding my smile. Dr. Bukai explained my treatment plan in layman’s terms and made me feel more and more comfortable. My new crowns are AMAZING. Dr. Bukai is like Michelangelo.
    Max B.
  • Three dentists before Dr. Bukai couldn’t find a solution. Dr. Bukai had one right away. One single visit, no extra costs, no sales pitches. No pain during and after. His human sensibility to know what to do — and his continued dental education — did not hurt in my case either.
    Michael M.
  • Dr. Bukai and his staff are always very accommodating especially when I have an issue with my teeth. Whenever I consider going to a dentist that is closer to me I always remember their service and tell myself, “Nah! Why should I want to do that!"
    Brenda M.

TMJ & Sleep Apnea FAQs

How much does a sleep apnea oral appliance cost?

Appliances differ by design, and every case is different. We'll walk you through the full investment before treatment begins. For care beyond insurance, we offer CareCredit, Sunbit, and Proceed Financial, and members of our in-house plan receive a discount on treatment.

Am I a candidate for oral appliance therapy?

Custom oral appliances are made for patients who've been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea or primary snoring. If that describes you, and especially if CPAP has been a struggle, Washington, DC TMJ & sleep apnea dentistry is worth a consultation. Dr. Bukai evaluates your airway, bite, and overall health before recommending anything.

Do I need a sleep study first?

Yes. An oral appliance treats a diagnosed condition, and a sleep study is how physicians make that diagnosis. If you already have one, we can move ahead with an evaluation. If you don't, we'll explain what testing involves and how it fits into your care.

How long until I have my appliance?

Every appliance is custom fabricated, so timelines vary from case to case. You'll leave your consultation knowing what to expect, including how many visits it takes and when you can start sleeping with it.

Do you accept my insurance?

We're in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Delta Dental, Guardian, MetLife, and United Concordia, and we file with most PPO plans out-of-network. We verify your benefits before your appointment and explain your coverage in plain language.
